With an 18-month whirlwind presidential election and nail biting jitters finally behind us, more are perhaps dismayed than truly surprised with last night's election results. Yet, some still wonder how a misogynistic, orange-skinned, capitalistic, "deplorable" (as so popularly coined by the left), won against the Democratic Party's seasoned career politician with an impressive political and social record. Best answer: The Democratic Party cut their own throats by choosing a seasoned career politician with an impressive political and social record, that was under consistent scrutiny by the FBI and congress throughout the election, as their candidate of choice. The Democrats simply missed the mark. Along with the underhanded treatment of Senator Bernie Sanders by the Democratic National Committee, as well as the numerous scandals that surrounded the Clinton campaign, the American people realized that the Democratic Party no longer represented their core values.
Americans at heart are an honest and moral people, despising corruption and oligarchical power, and priding themselves on freedom and courage. Americans have seen what decades of career politicians have done to this country: insurmountable debt; fractured global relations; a healthcare system where it's more affordable for the lower middle class to pay a penalty than actually get healthcare; along with immigration policies that hurt both the American citizens and immigrants looking for a better life. These are exactly the public concerns and innate virtues that the Trump campaign used to their advantage. They used the American people's desire for truth, ethical conduct, morality and fear, against themselves. Steering this nation towards a complete political outsider, the underdog, the seemingly lesser evil. Americans were tired, they were angry, they wanted out of the never ending loop of corruption and 'too big to fail'-- or 'too big to jail' ideology that has run this nation for so long. They wanted change no matter the cost, employing an 'ends justify the means' type dogmatism, that conservatives so demonize the left for using.
Although, did Trump win because of deep-seeded racism and misogyny? Best answer: Not exactly.... Both campaigns were endorsed by the Klu Klux Klan: Grand Dragon Will Quigg for Clinton, and David Duke for Trump; making both campaigns initial endorsements 'deplorably' white. However, Trump received the most minority votes of any Republican candidate to date, swaying even a large number of hispanics under his wing of change. As for misogyny, both campaigns were riddled with incomprehensible scandals and sexual assault allegations, some more credible than others. While the Trump campaign became inundated with sexual harassment suits coming from several Miss America contestants, not to mention Trump's own sexist remarks while on the campaign trail. The Clinton campaign was slammed with proven sexual assault incidents perpetrated by Bill Clinton and Hillary's own role in silencing the victims; the human rights scandals surrounding the Clinton Foundation, along with the donations from known countries of women's rights violations, the final nail in the coffin may have come from the Clinton's association with Anthony Weiner, Huma Abedin's estranged husband. In the end, American's may have preferred an outright misogynist than a candidate who pretended to care but would rather accept money than actually help rape victims or just women in general, for that matter. In this case Clinton's actions and even alleged actions, spoke louder than any speech she could have provided.
"What about the Independents? It's speculated that Trump won because of Third Party voters taking numbers away from Clinton."
To start, Third Party voters really should be given an open apology from both sides of the aisle. We have endured so much ridicule this election, even being cursed to our faces for supporting anyone else besides the establishment candidates. There were so many people telling us we wasted our vote; we were un-American, we should be tried for treason! We should be shot dead! And that our vote would have been a vote for Clinton or Trump (depending on whoever decided to verbally assault us that day). Trust me, we have heard it all. In reality everyone should have listened to the Third Party voice. We were the most rational voter of all of you. If both Democrats and Republicans had been smart they would have rallied behind a Third Party candidate, any candidate at that, instead of accepting the Democratic 90s hand-me-downs, and the Republican's candidate whom they pulled from the rat infested back alleys of Wall Street.
But to answer everyone's question, no Trump did not win the election because of Third Party voters alone. If voting Third Party had done what pollsters speculated, one of two options would have occurred. Either Third Party votes would have significantly damaged Trump's chances of winning, or the election would have ended in a tie. Neither of those events occurred. While the Democrats now blame the Third Partiers for Clinton's loss, (curse us if you must to feel better), in reality the Independents' support would not have won her the necessary electoral votes. At best it would have led to a tie. If Clinton had truly had the numbers to carry her to victory it would have been her with 279 electoral votes instead of Trump, who was also sans Third Party support.
So what do we do now? Cordially accept our fate, and make sure never to do this again. Simple as that... or as simple as it can be.
